Without further ado, here are my top 5 book trends I am tired of.

1) Insta-love

61vhe0u9ppl-_sx329_bo1204203200_I am really fed up of reading book that have insta-love in them. Love doesn’t happen instantly, it takes time for two people to fall in love. I just wish that authors would give the couple a little longer to fall in love, just let them take their time when they are falling for one another. Sometimes if insta-love is written really well I don’t mind it too much but I am much more of a fan when the couple fall in love over time. The most recent book I read that had insta-love in it was The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon, this book didn’t do insta-love too badly.

2)Butterflies on Book Covers

9781471147142This one might sound like a stupid one but recently I have seen so many book covers with butterflies on them. I like seeing books with really unique covers it makes them stand out for me and make me what to buy them even more. So, I really dislike when I keep seeing books with butterflies on the cover. Sometimes they take over the entire over and other times there are multiple over the cover. Butterflies are meant to show uniqueness I know that but it would be much more unique if covers used other things. The Diabolic by S.J Kincaid is an example of this.

3) Movie Book Covers Tie-ins

Room-Film-Tie-in.jpgI have always disliked these book covers but recently I have really started to hate them. They are a method used to promote the movie by showing people who only know of the movie that both the book and movie are related. I really don’t think this needs to be done, just leave the cover how it was before a movie was made, it show the book for what it really is. I hated it when they did it for The BFG because I love the original cover so much. The only movie book cover I have is of the Room by Emma Donoghue. I had no choice but to get the movie cover because the book store I was in only stocked the movie cover. I love the original cover of this book and had been looking around for a long time but had to get the movie cover.

4) Love Triangles

15749186.jpgThis is another thing I am really fed up of. I hate reading books and having a character start to fall in love with one person and getting into that storyline for a little. Then suddenly someone else is introduced and they fall in love with that person and it keeps going round in the little triangle. I listened to the audiobook of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han very recently and the love triangle in that book started to annoy me. I just wish books had one couple falling in love and them only.

5) Physics Book Titles

we areThis is one that David just pointed out to me. A lot of the book I own and have been recently have titles that seem extremely profound about science. Really, all of these titles in terms of science don’t make complete sense and aren’t as profound as they seem. Examples of book titles like this are: The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon, We Are All Made of Molecule by Susin Nielsen and The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. If an author is going to use a science book title make sure it makes complete sense and isn’t something so obvious it wants to make the reader scream.

  1. How did I forget about movie covers! What annoys me is that they fall apart before you’ve even finished reading the book! They are so cheap and ugly. Definitely not needed!

  2. Ugh, I agree with every single one of them. So annoying. Especially the insta-love, how in the world could I forget about it? Great post!

  3. Number 3, definitely. What I hated even more was that midway through writing the Sookie Stackhouse novels, Charlaine Harris totally sold out to the TV series fandom. Not only did the covers all change to feature the actors but she started to reference things in the books that only happened in the TV series and never in her own novels! No need at all.

  4. Insta-love/love triangles are the worse!!! It almost makes me hate the book because of it. Also movie tie-in covers. I know the movie is coming out but it looks bad next to the collection.
