I was having a look at my books the other day and found a lot of the books I read as a child. It made me think about my favourite books that I read as a child. These books all had a big impact on my life and how I viewed reading as a whole. Here are my favourite books I read whilst growing up!
Matilda by Roald Dahl
“Matilda is a little girl who is far too good to be true. At age five-and-a-half she’s knocking off double-digit multiplication problems and blitz-reading Dickens. Even more remarkably, her classmates love her even though she’s a super-nerd and the teacher’s pet. But everything is not perfect in Matilda’s world. For starters she has two of the most idiotic, self-centered parents who ever lived. Then there’s the large, busty nightmare of a school principal, Miss (“The”) Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who flings children at will and is approximately as sympathetic as a bulldozer. Fortunately for Matilda, she has the inner resources to deal with such annoyances: astonishing intelligence, saintly patience, and an innate predilection for revenge.”
I will forever love this book. I believe this is the book that made me love reading as much as I do. Reading about someone else loving books as much as I did made me happy when I was younger. This book shows how triumphant a little girl can actually be and all whilst reading books too. I read this book every year and continue to love it as much as I did.
The BFG by Roald Dahl
“Captured by a giant! The BFG is no ordinary bone-crunching giant. He is far too nice and jumbly. It’s lucky for Sophie that he is. Had she been carried off in the middle of the night by the Bloodbottler, the Fleshlumpeater, the Bonecruncher, or any of the other giants-rather than the BFG-she would have soon become breakfast.”
Another book I love to this day. It is such a magical and imaginative story that made me incredibly happy as a child. This book has always stuck with me because of all the incredible things that happen throughout it. I own a few copies of this book because the one I had as a child was so well read pages were falling out!
The Story of Tracey Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson
“Tracy is ten years old. She lives in a Children’s Home but would like a real home one day, with a real family. Meet Tracy, follow her story and share her hopes for the future in this beautifully observed, touching and often very funny tale, all told in Tracy’s own words.”
Jacqueline Wilson was another author that I loved when I was a child. This book specifically was one of my favourite books as a child. It was so fun to read at the same time as being realistic. Jacqueline Wilson recently released a new story in the Tracey Beaker series from the perspective of Tracey’s daughter Jess. I cannot wait to read it and see what happens.
Nelly the Monster Sitter Series by Kes Gray
“When Petronella Morton puts an ad in the local newspaper for “MONSTER-SITTING AFTER SCHOOL AND WEEKEND:S,” little does she know that her phone will begin to ring…AND RING AND RING AND RING! Nelly soon discovers that there are families of monsters living secretly all over the Montelimar Estate!”
I had the entire series of these books when I was younger and loved them so much. They were so magical and imaginative and would captivate me for hours. I remember my favourite one being Huffaluks, Muggots and Thermitts. I still have a copy of that one that I found the other day. I’m sure I kept the rest of the series too!
There you have it, my favourite books that I read as a child. These books made me the reader i am today! What were your favourite books you read as a child? Let me know in the comments.
