Things I’d Like to See More of in YA!

Hello all! I hope you are all doing well and keeping yourselves safe. Not too long ago the lovely Wonderfully Bookish tagged me to discuss some things I’d like to see more of in YA. It got me thinking of just a few things I’d love to see more of in YA and I wanted to discuss those with you all in this post! Here is a post about things I’d like to see more of in YA!

Main Characters who like reading and do it frequently

This is such a rarity to me in YA books and I don’t get why. It is so surprising to me when reading a YA book and the main character or even a side character is a reader as well. Some characters do mention reading as a hobby but they don’t actively discuss it with their friends/partners etc. I’d just like it to be seen in books that characters in your books enjoy reading too. I’d like a bookwork main character in YA for sure.

A romance that builds slowly

I love a good romance book but watching it build slowly over the course of a book or even a series is something I’d like more of. I’ve seen a trend of insta-love over the past few years and I am not the biggest fan of it. I’d love a romance that takes time to build, we see the characters gain feelings for each other slowly and that romance takes time to blossom into a relationship. Even if it takes the entire book or a couple of books in a series I would love to see more of that.

Platonic love with no underlying romance storyline

This is so rare that I don’t think I’ve read many books like this. I’d love to see more YA books that show the love you can have for friends and how much you can love your friends. Give me platonic love and found family with no underlying romance storyline! I just want good wholesome books about friendships!

Family relationships!

I want more family relationships as the centre of books. Good relationships or bad relationships, give me the variety and give me family! I would love to read a book where the main character is close to their sister and goes on days out with them and to concerts etc. I’d also love to see more main characters close to their family members and have more family love in books!

There you have it, some things I’d like to see more of in YA books! Thank you so much to Charlotte for tagging me in this. What do you want to see more of in YA books let me know in the comments!

  1. YES YES YES I agree with every single point on here!! I love a slow burn romance and I really love platonic relationships in books. Also I am so fed up the absent parents trope

  2. One that fits a few of these (in my opinion) is Standing By by Tabitha G. Kelly! The slow romance part for sure, because it’s not like one of those ‘burning passionate love’ YA books. It’s more like a cute romance kind of thing, which also includes some strong family relationships in there πŸ™‚

  3. I LOVE slow burn romance! It’s the best kind of romance. I also love good family relationships in books both blood family and found family 😌

  4. I completely agree with every single thing you had, but I would add that I’d love to see YA main characters with hobbies in general. I feel like we never see anyone do or mention a hobby in YA.
