Hello all and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday! This weeks top ten topic is ten things that will make me instantly NOT want to read a book. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted the The Broke and the Bookish.
Again, I am going to set this Top Ten Tuesday into two sections, if it contains and if the cover has.
So without further ado, here is this weeks Top Ten Tuesday, ten things that will make me instantly NOT want to read a book.
If It Contains:
1) Insta-love
I really cannot stand stories where the couple fall in love instantly and within a day they are together and completely inseparable. It is unrealistic in my opinion and I am just a fan of relationships that develop over the time you re reading the book. Not within the first 100 pages.
2) Historical Settings
I know this one is gonna sound stupid but I really dislike historical settings in books. I think this stems from the fact I hate period dramas on the TV so I really don’t want to read anything like that in a book. History does interest me I just don’t think in a fictional story it would.
3) Vampires
I cannot stand vampires at all. I was all vampired out after reading the first book in the Twilight series. I wasn’t a fan of them at all, so I would not be interested in a book if it was all about vampires.
4) Werewolves
Again, I cannot stand werewolves at all. Not a fan of the twilight series and that really impacted on me reading any books about werewolves again. They just don’t appeal to me and I don’t think I would enjoy a book containing them.
5) Princesses
I seem to have it in my head that a lot of books at the minute contain princesses and princes. This just doesn’t appeal to me what so ever. I can’t really explain why but they just really don’t appeal to me.
If The Cover Has:
I know this section is going to sound bad as it is all judging a book by its cover but it does happen.
6) A Movie/TV Cover Tie-in
If I am ever going to buy a book I want the original cover. I’m really not a fan of movie/TV cover tie-ins. I had this issue recently with the Thirteen Reasons Why book. The bookstores only had the tie-in cover so I had to order the original online. But I am much happier with the original covers of books.
7) Too Much Information
If a book cover is too crowded and just contains too many things for one persons brain to understand I won’t pick that book up. Because I want to be a graphic designer in the future I am quite picky when it comes to little details and I really like it when book covers are simple yet tell a lot about the book. If the cover of a book has too much information I will avoid it for now and maybe pick it up later.
8) A half-naked woman/man or couple on it
I cannot stand book cover that have half-naked humans on them. What is the need to do this! I am not at all a fan of erotic books and the covers play a huge part in this. I do not want to carry around a book with a half-naked human on it. I want something nicely designed and not raunchy.
9) Pictures on it
I cannot make myself pick up books with pictures of couples or a girl sat thinking on them. My only exception to this was To All the Boy’s I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, which I did really enjoy. But, most of the time if a book cover contains a picture or multiple pictures instead of an illustration I am unlikely to pick it up.
10) A fantasy looking character
I am not a huge fan of fantasy books. I will read them from time to time but usually I avoid them and I think a lot of the time it is down to the cover. I can’t think of what series it is at the minute but all the covers contain a lady in a big huge fantasy dress. It just doesn’t appeal to me. I’m sorry to everyone out their that loves those books I just can’t get interested in them.

#8 is on my list today, too, because yuck. I’m also not a big fan of vampires, werewolves or princesses. Maybe I’m just too old for that kind of thing? *Sigh*
Happy TTT!

I despise instalove. I personally adore stories where relationships begin as strong friendships and grow into something more. Great list!

I’m exactly the same. It makes for such a better story. Thank you!

I think seeing a half naked and well build man on the cover is probably one of my biggest turn offs! Though I have to admit, I do own a few of those books and I definitely really enjoyed reading them a couple of years ago! I mean, they did all tell pretty much the same kind of story with different characters and featured rather graphic sex scenes, but apparently, that’s something I used to enjoy! XD I wouldn’t even go anywhere near that now!
However, I do find it funny that that is something that will turn me away from a book since I’m usually drawn to things because of an attractive cast, etc! I guess the same doesn’t apply to the books I read. Or is it because I don’t want people seeing those books and thinking that’s all I read? I don’ know.

I am also not a fan of movie tie-in covers. Just give me the original. Great list. Happy reading!

Exactly! The online movie tie-in I have is Room by Emma Donoghue because they had none of the other covers in stock anywhere! Thank you!

Nice list! I agree so much with insta-love. Talk about boring, unoriginal and unrealistic. I like seeing characters work for their relationship instead of it instantly happening and everything being perfect :”)

Yeah exactly. You have to work in real life so make it like that in books!
