Mera: Tidebreaker – Danielle Paige

Book ReviewThank you to the publisher who gifted me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Mera is the heir to the throne of Xebel, the other not-so-lost colony under the sea. Mera isn’t destined to wear the crown of Xebel, she is destined to wear Atlantis’ crown. She is sent to kill the heir to Atlantis’ throne, Arthur Curry. Whilst the unrest between their colonies grows, Mera and Arthur fall in love. Will Arthur be the King by Mera’s side or will he die under her blade?

Photo_1554152377248Mera: Tidebreaker is a Young Adult graphic novel telling of Mera and Aquaman’s origins. Now, I knew absolutely nothing about Mera or Aquaman before reading this graphic novel. I felt that Tidebreak was an excellent introduction to Mera and her world. I learnt a lot about Mera, her world, her personality and her character throughout this graphic novel.

I loved the art style in this graphic novel, it was toned-down in colour but beautiful. It really made Mera and her red hair stand out. I was also a fan of the whole storyline especially when Mera was exploring the land and how different it was to her life in the water.

The reason I didn’t give this graphic novel a 4 or 5 star rating was the big focus it had on insta-love. I am not a fan of insta-love at all! Obviously some people maybe and would enjoy this. I just didn’t enjoy the relationship being a big whirlwind and it didn’t add to the story for me, instead it took away from my experience.

I still enjoyed this graphic novel overall and I am excited to see what else the DC Ink graphic novels have in store with all the other DC characters. I know that I am excited about the Harley Quinn story due out later this year.

I think this is a wonderful introduction to Mera and Arthur and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! I cannot wait for more DC Ink graphic novels in the future.

3 Stars

LineHappy Reading
