What Makes Me Pick Up A Book? – Book Tag

Book TagHello all, hope you are all well, keeping safe and looking after yourselves! Recently my amazing friend Charlotte from Wonderfully Bookish tagged me in her original book tag and I cannot wait to take part. I love a good book tag and this one seems like a lot of fun! Here is the what makes me pick up a book? book tag!LineDo you judge a book by its cover?

I’m not even scared to say this because I really do judge a book by it’s cover. A cover is always what draws me to a book first. If I don’t know about a book but it has a beautiful cover I will definitely pick it up, read the synopsis and maybe even buy it.

Focusing just on the cover, what attracts you to pick it up?

I’m always a fan of an illustrated cover. Give me illustrations, pretty fonts and a bit of foil on the cover and I’m most likely sold. I’m not a fan of real images of people on covers and can sometimes be put off by this. I don’t like ‘girly’ covers that much but can sometimes be drawn into them. Just give a pretty illustrated cover and I will more than likely be sold on it!

Do you read the synopsis first, or prefer to go in without knowing anything about the book?

It really depends for me. Sometimes I read a synopsis and that is the reason I go into the book. Other times I am a fan of the author or have heard amazing things about a book via Twitter or blogs or just generally online, then I will pick the book up and read it without knowing much about it at all. I trust certain people when it comes to recommending books so if they recommend a book and say it is something I will enjoy, I’ll likely pick it up without reading the synopsis. More often than not though I will read the synopsis first.

Do you have any auto-buy authors – authors whose books you will always buy, even without knowing anything about them?

Most certainly! I have a number of auto-buy authors whose books I will literally just pick up even if I know nothing about them. They are:

  • Lauren James
  • Alice Oseman
  • Maggie Harcourt
  • Angie Thomas
  • Becky Albertalli
  • Jennifer Niven
  • Nicola Yoon
  • Sara Barnard
  • Akemi Dawn Bowman

Are you more likely to pick up a book if it includes specific elements/themes? (e.g. LGBTQ+, mental health rep, disability rep, etc.)

Most definitely! I love a book that discusses mental health especially if it a mental health I’ve not read about before or is something I feel doesn’t get enough representation. I am always a sucker for anything that involves romance and friendship. They are two of my favourite things in books. Also give me a psychological thriller or mention that on a cover of a book and most of the time I am sold. One thing that I am enjoying a lot at the minute is fake dating, I’ve no idea why but I am really enjoying that!

Do you ever read a book that has generally negative reviews just to form your own opinion of it?

Not really, I am very swayed by reviews and if a book has overall bad reviews I am not very likely at all to pick it up. If a book is already on my shelf however and is getting negative reviews generally, then I may give a go and see what I think.

Do you ever buy a book just because another book blogger or BookTuber has reviewed it or talked about it a lot?

Always, if a blogger of BookTuber has hyped a book and loves a book or I see it constantly talked about on social media then it is very likely that I will pick it up and give it a read. Certain bloggers and BookTubers in particular, I really trust when it comes to reviews and then I will certainly pick up them books.

Is there anyone whose book recommendations you will generally always trust?

There certainly are people whose book recommendations I generally always trust and they are:
