I’ve always loved listening to a good audiobook and recently I’ve been listening to them a lot more. I wanted to talk about some of the reasons why I love audiobooks because I know there is always a discussion about whether they are ‘real reading’. Well, they are and I love them! Here are 5 reasons why I love audiobooks.
I can listen anywhere
There are so many times throughout the day where I wish I was sat down, cosied up with my book but I cannot be. That doesn’t mean I can’t be reading in other ways though! Having an audiobook means I can listen whilst I’m cleaning, doing work, when I’m on a walk or when I want to listen to something different to my music. It brings me the joy of reading a book whilst on-the-go and means I get extra reading time as well!
It brings a story to life in new ways
You could be reading a book for the first time or re-reading it for the tenth time but no matter what audiobooks bring the story to life in ways reading the physical book wouldn’t. You aren’t just listening to someone read the story to you, they are performing it. It brings the characters to life in a way that reading to yourself wouldn’t. I’ve listened to so many of my favourite books in audiobook format after reading the physical and I always notice new things and connect to new parts of the story. I feel for the characters more and feel more immersed in the story than I normally would do.
It makes everything fun!
Dreading doing the cleaning and tidying? What about all the admin tasks you have? An audiobook will make them a whole lot more fun! I hate cleaning the house and all the boring admin task. But, if I am in the middle of an amazing audiobook or know I have one to start those tasks become so much easier and a lot more fun!
It challenges my reading interests
When it comes to reading physical books, I very rarely stray from what I am used to and what I know that I will enjoy. When it comes to audiobooks though I feel my reading interests and go-to’s are always challenged. I tend to go for things I would not normally pick up.
I’ve found I really struggle with reading fantasy novels in the physical format but in audiobook format I enjoy them a lot. I feel this is because when listening to an audiobook you have the story performed to you and you are fully immersed in the story and the world. I cannot do this when reading fantasy in the physical format so it opens my reading interests a whole lot more.
Audiobooks are inclusive!
There is an ongoing discussion when it comes to audiobooks about if they are ‘real reading’. Of course they are real reading! They are for everyone. I’ve seen first hand in my job, people who want to read but due to their visual impairment, health conditions and even their concentration span cannot pick up a physical book. Audiobooks are so important for that reason (and more). Everyone deserves the opportunity to read a book and audiobooks provide that opportunity to those who otherwise would not be able to read. Audiobooks are real books and they matter a lot!
