Recent Reads I’d Recommend!

I’ve read a lot of exceptional books recently and I cannot stop thinking about some of them. So, I thought it would be fun to share some of the books I’ve read recently and would highly recommend. Here are some recent reads I’d recommend.

In a mysterious town that lies hidden in our collective subconscious, there’s a quaint little store where all kinds of dreams are sold . . .

Day and night, visitors both human and animal from all over the world shuffle in sleepily in their pyjamas, lining up to purchase their latest adventure. Each floor in the department store sells a special kind of dream, including nostalgic dreams about your childhood, trips you’ve taken, and delicious food you’ve eaten, as well as nightmares and more mysterious dreams.

In Dallergut Dream Department Store we meet Penny an enthusiastic new-hire; Dallergut, the flamboyant owner of the department store; Agnap Coco, producer of special dreams; Vigo Myers, an employee in the mystery department as well as the cast of curious, funny and strange clientele that regularly visit the store. When one of the most coveted and expensive dreams gets stolen during Penny’s first week, we follow along with her as she tries to uncover the workings of this wonderfully whimsical world.

I finished reading this one last week and I adored it. It fun, whimsical and easy to read. I loved the way we are introduced to the DallerGut Dream Department store and how it works because it helps to draw you into the book instantly. I cannot wait for the next in this series which I will be reading as soon as I can. I cannot recommend it enough!

This collection of stories is about women and their experiences in society, about bodies and the bodily, mapping the skin and bones of its characters through their experiences of isolation, obsession and love. Throughout the collection, women become insects, men turn to stone, a city becomes insomniac and bodies are picked apart to make up better ones. The mundane worlds of schools and sea side towns are invaded and transformed by the physical, creating a landscape which is constantly shifting to hold on to the bodies of its inhabitants. Blending the mythic and the fantastic, the collection considers characters in motion – turning away, turning back or simply turning into something new.

This is a beautiful and entrancing collection of short stories which I cannot recommend enough. There are nine stories throughout this book each of them with the theme of womanhood at their heart. I’ve thought about them all a lot since reading this book back in June. One in particular, The Great Awake, I think I’ll be thinking about forever.

The three Blue sisters are exceptional—and exceptionally different. Avery, the eldest and a recovering heroin addict turned strait-laced lawyer, lives with her wife in London; Bonnie, a former boxer, works as a bouncer in Los Angeles following a devastating defeat; and Lucky, the youngest, models in Paris while trying to outrun her hard-partying ways. They also had a fourth sister, Nicky, whose unexpected death left Avery, Bonnie, and Lucky reeling. A year later, as they each navigate grief, addiction, and ambition, they find they must return to New York to stop the sale of the apartment they were raised in.

But coming home is never as easy as it seems. As the sisters reckon with the disappointments of their childhood and the loss of the only person who held them together, they realize the greatest secrets they’ve been keeping might not have been from each other, but from themselves.

This is potentially my favourite book of 2024 for so many reasons. It is exceptionally written and tells such a beautiful story about sisters and sisterhood. Not only that, but it has endometriosis representation which means a lot to me as a reader. This representation felt very realistic and honest. I would highly recommend this one.

It’s November 2023. The human race has been wiped out by the 6DM virus (Six Days Maximum – the longest you’ve got before your body destroys itself). The end of the world as we know it.

Yet someone is still alive. Alone in a new world of burning cities, rotting corpses and ravenous rats, one woman has survived. A woman who has spent her whole life compromising what she wants and hiding how she feels to meet other people’s expectations. From her career to her relationships, to what she wears and where she lives, she’s made a lifetime of decisions to fit what other people want her to be.

But with no one else left, who will she become now that she’s completely alone?

This is one that I finished just a couple of days ago and it was exceptional. Telling the story of the last woman left on earth after a deadly virus wipes out the rest of the human race. It grips you from the very start and tells such a captivating and thought-provoking story. I’d recommend looking at the trigger warnings before going into this one. But, if following this it still intrigues you then I’d highly recommend it.

There you have it, recent reads I would recommend. What books have you read recently and would recommend? Let me know in the comments!
