What I Read in December!

We are less than a week away before the end of 2019 and the end of the decade and I cannot believe it. It has really been a year of blink and you’ll miss it. I managed to do an awful lot this month despite being ill for a while and I also read a lot of books. Here is what I read in December! Line The Wrong Side of Kai by Estelle Maskame

“With a father who doesn’t notice her, it’s easy for her to sneak around with her latest fling, Harrison Boyd. But when an explicit video of Vanessa hooking up with Harrison is leaked the morning after she ends things with him, her life is thrown into chaos.

This book was exactly what I needed when I picked it up. A fun contemporary that I breezed right the way through. Although it isn’t one of my favourite books I’ve read it was a lot of fun and took my mind off regular life whilst reading it. So, I would recommend it.

What I Leave Behind by Alison McGhee

“After his dad commits suicide, Will tries to overcome his own misery by secretly helping the people around him in this story made up of one hundred chapters of one hundred words each.

Sixteen-year-old Will spends most of his days the same way: Working at the Dollar Only store, trying to replicate his late father’s famous cornbread recipe, and walking the streets of Los Angeles. Will started walking after his father committed suicide, and three years later he hasn’t stopped. But there are some places Will can’t walk by: The blessings store with the chest of 100 Chinese blessings in the back, the bridge on Fourth Street where his father died, and his childhood friend Playa’s house.”

With just 100 chapters of 100 hundred words each I read this book in just one sitting and I loved it. Despite having very few words this feels like a fully fledged and packed out story that I throughly enjoyed reading. It is the perfect book to pick up when you want to read something quickly and it still be wonderful.

Loveboat, Taipei by Abigial Hing Wen

“When eighteen-year-old Ever Wong’s parents send her from Ohio to Taiwan to study Mandarin for the summer, she finds herself thrust among the very over-achieving kids her parents have always wanted her to be, including Rick Woo, the Yale-bound prodigy profiled in the Chinese newspapers since they were nine—and her parents’ yardstick for her never-measuring-up life.

Unbeknownst to her parents, however, the program is actually an infamous teen meet-market nicknamed Loveboat, where the kids are more into clubbing than calligraphy and drinking snake-blood sake than touring sacred shrines.”

The Sky is Mine by Amy Beashel

This books is incredible and I want everyone to read it when it is released next year. It is heart-breaking, heart-warming and an already amazing story. I will be posting a full review of this in the New Year so keep an eye out for that!
