Gottie is a fangirl for the TV show about paranormal detectives, Loch & Ness. Gottie is convinced that two of the male actors, Rob Hennings and Nathan O’Donnell are dating and she will stop at nothing to prove it. When Gottie’s online investigations accidentally uncover far more than she expects, she becomes complicit in a lot of secrets beyond just the romantic conspiracy theory.
An Unauthorised Fan Treatise is an internet thriller told in a ‘true crime’ style recollection of events. This online novel includes social media extracts, such as Tweets and Tumblr post as well as LiveJournal blog entries.
I’m sure many of you know just how much I love Lauren James’ writing as I go on about it non-stop. Her novel The Loneliest Girl in the Universe is my favourite book of all time and has been since its release. So, as soon as I found out that Lauren would be writing a serialised novel with a chapter being posted each week online, it is safe to say I was incredibly excited.
At first I started reading the novel as it came out weekly to the public but the writing and the story were so amazing and had me so hooked I became a member of her Patreon. This meant I got to access chapters a little bit earlier. I finished reading the novel around two weeks ago but wanted to wait until today to post my review because as of today, you can go to gottiewrites.wordpress.com and read the entire novel as soon as you’d like.
Lauren James has such a way with words and it is no different with this novel. I’d never read a serialised novel before this but I am hoping to read more in the future. This novel is full of questions, intrigued, characters to love and of course a few twists and turns.
On top of all this you have Gottie, the totally unreliable narrator who makes you question everything and also a few conspiracy theories along the way. All of this made me have an alert set on my phone for new chapters coming each week just to see what happens.
This novel isn’t something I can tell you much about without giving too much away but that does mean I can say, give it a read yourself and see what you think. You won’t be disappointed. An Unauthorised Fan Treatise is the perfect exploration of the toxicity we often see in fan culture, the power of the internet and the people using it. It explores why you shouldn’t trust everything that you read and on top of that, the plot revolves around a murder mystery!
I can’t believe that after reading this novel since last October that it is now over but I can’t wait to see what happens in the future with this novel. I would love to see it again in print form, some time in the future because Gottie’s story is one that needs to be seen by many!
I cannot recommend this novel enough and you can now give the entire thing a read here. An Unauthorised Fan Treatise is an intriguing and enticing novel that I was hooked on for weeks. I highly recommend that you give it a read whilst you can!
Ooft this sounds amazing and clever and now I really need it haha. I love books that explore fandoms, and all of the passion and drama that stems from them.
