Avery Byrne has secrets. She’s queer; she’s in love with her best friend, Cass; and she’s suffering from undiagnosed clinical depression. But on the morning Avery plans to jump into the river near her college campus, the world discovers there are only nine days left to an asteroid is headed for Earth, and no one can stop it.
Trying to spare her family and Cass additional pain, Avery does her best to make it through just nine more days. As time runs out and secrets slowly come to light, Avery would do anything to save the ones she loves. But most importantly, she learns to save herself. Speak her truth. Seek the support she needs. Find hope again in the tomorrows she has left.

If Tomorrow Doesn’t Come is a spectacular YA debut novel which tells of hope, pain and love. It is a beautiful book that I am so glad I had the absolute pleasure of reading.

Avery is such a wonderful main character. Her depression is such a huge part of her life but this book shows that it is not her entire personality. Throughout the book we see Avery’s dreams, hopes and how she is struggling to live up to the expectations she has of herself.
Of course, there is the looming disaster of an asteroid about to destroy life as everyone knows it which in some books would completely overshadow Avery’s journey. In this book, that doesn’t happen. The author manages to balance both the impending doom and Avery’s personal journey perfectly and it makes for a stunning book.
I love when a book has an amazing set of secondary characters and If Tomorrow Doesn’t Come has just that. I loved Cass and Aisha, Avery’s crush and roommate. Avery’s family felt fully formed and over the course of the book, we really get to know them well. Special mention goes to Teddy who is a little legend.
Jen St. Jude has done an extraordinary job of covering so many hard-hitting topics in this book yet still leaving the reader feeling hopeful and happy by the end of the story. The way this book discusses religion, love, depression, family and personal growth is beautiful and had me captivated. I will certainly be looking for more books by Jen St. Jude in the future as their writing is captivating.
Overall, If Tomorrow Doesn’t Come is a bittersweet and hopeful end-of-the-world book with stunning character development throughout. I cannot recommend it enough!
