What I Read in August!

I can’t get my head around how quickly this year is going. How are we almost in September already? I’ve managed to read quite a few books in August, more than I expected too. In this post, you will find a bunch of mini-reviews for the books I read in August. Here they are!

When Delilah meets Sawyer Saffitz (son of Anya Saffitz, aka Hollywood royalty), she becomes hooked on a decade-old scandal. In her quest for the truth, Delilah uncovers blogposts written by the mysterious “gottiewrites” and is soon caught up in a world of greed, fandom conspiracy theories … and murder. And the deeper Delilah digs, the more dangerous it becomes – because someone is willing to kill to hide the truth.

The minute Wren James’ new book arrive on my doorstep I started reading it. I’ve been waiting for a follow on to An Unauthorised Fan Treatise since finishing that years ago. This was such a gripping addition to the story and one that you can actually read on it’s own. It is full of mystery, intrigue and thrilling moments. I loved it. I’ve written a full review which you can find here.

Seven tickets. An island of dreams. The chance of a lifetime.

Welcome to the Grandest Game, an annual competition run by billionaire Avery Grambs and the four infamous Hawthorne brothers, whose family fortune she inherited. Designed to give anyone a shot at fame and fortune, this year’s game requires one of seven golden tickets to enter. With millions on the line, those seven players will do whatever it takes to win.

Some of the players are in it for the money. Some for power. Some for reasons all their own. Every single one of them has secrets. Amidst it all is Grayson Hawthorne, tasked with a vital role in this year’s game. But as tensions rise and the mind-bending challenges push the players to their limits—physically, mentally, and emotionally—it soon becomes clear that not everyone is playing by the rules.

This is another one that as soon as it arrived at my house I started reading it. You get hooked into the story immediately and the short chapters keep you gripped. It only took me a couple of sittings to read through the entirety of this one and it was such a wonderful addition to this series. I’m so excited to read the follow up next year and I would highly recommend it!

In a mysterious town that lies hidden in our collective subconscious, there’s a quaint little store where all kinds of dreams are sold . . .

Day and night, visitors both human and animal from all over the world shuffle in sleepily in their pyjamas, lining up to purchase their latest adventure. Each floor in the department store sells a special kind of dream, including nostalgic dreams about your childhood, trips you’ve taken, and delicious food you’ve eaten, as well as nightmares and more mysterious dreams.

In Dallergut Dream Department Store we meet Penny an enthusiastic new-hire; Dallergut, the flamboyant owner of the department store; Agnap Coco, producer of special dreams; Vigo Myers, an employee in the mystery department as well as the cast of curious, funny and strange clientele that regularly visit the store. When one of the most coveted and expensive dreams gets stolen during Penny’s first week, we follow along with her as she tries to uncover the workings of this wonderfully whimsical world.

This is such a unique, fun and whimsical story that you can’t help but fall in love with. I loved Penny and all the other characters we get to meet throughout this book and the way it looks at dreams. It certainly makes you think about dreams differently. I cannot wait to get my hands on the follow up soon.

Here is a little snapshot of 5 of the books that I’ve read this month along with the rating I gave them. I had a lot of fun reading all of them each for their own reasons.

  • The Ex Vows by Jessica Joyce – ★★★★
  • Mr Salary by Sally Rooney – ★★★
  • Coming Back by Jessi Zabarsky – ★★★★
  • Love and Other Human Errors by Bethany Clift – ★★★★
  • So Late in the Day by Claire Keegan – ★★★★

It’s November 2023. The human race has been wiped out by the 6DM virus (Six Days Maximum – the longest you’ve got before your body destroys itself). The end of the world as we know it.

Yet someone is still alive. Alone in a new world of burning cities, rotting corpses and ravenous rats, one woman has survived. A woman who has spent her whole life compromising what she wants and hiding how she feels to meet other people’s expectations. From her career to her relationships, to what she wears and where she lives, she’s made a lifetime of decisions to fit what other people want her to be.

But with no one else left, who will she become now that she’s completely alone?

I was recommended this one by my best friend and I’m so glad I read it as soon as I could. It is such an interesting dystopian book which looks at the world after a disease wipes out the entire population. This didn’t get the hype it deserved when it was released and I feel like so many people would love this one. If you are looking for a unique dystopian book, I would highly recommend this one.

They were just friends. Best friends. Allies. They spent entire summers sitting on Shiloh’s porch steps, dreaming about the future. They were both going to get out of north Omaha—Shiloh would go to college and become an actress, and Cary would join the Navy. They promised each other that their friendship would never change.

Well, Shiloh did go to college, and Cary did join the Navy. And yet, somehow, everything changed.

Now Shiloh’s thirty-three, and it’s been fourteen years since she talked to Cary. She’s been married and divorced. She has two kids. And she’s back living in the same house she grew up in. Her life is nothing like she planned.

When she’s invited to an old friend’s wedding, all Shiloh can think about is whether Cary will be there—and whether she hopes he will be. Would Cary even want to talk to her? After everything?

The answer is yes. And yes. And yes.

Rainbow Rowell’s YA books were a staple in my teenage years and I’m so glad she has released a new adult fiction book which will be a highlight of my 20’s. This book was exceptional and tells such a compelling story of childhood best friends coming back together after years apart and how their relationship develops into something more. I loved it and have written a full review of it which you can find here.
