The Other Side of Disappearing – Kate Clayborn

Thank you to the publisher who gifted me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hairstylist Jess Greene has spent the last decade raising her younger half-sister, Tegan – and keeping a shocking secret. The boyfriend her reckless mother ran away with is actually an accomplished con man and subject of a wildly popular podcast, The Last Con of Lynton Baltimore.

Now thirty-one, Jess didn’t bargain on Tegan eventually piecing together the connection for herself. But Tegan plans to do exactly what Jess has always feared – leave their safe, stable home to search for their mother – and she’ll be accompanied by the prying podcast host and her watchful, handsome producer, Adam. Unwilling to let the sister she’s spent so much of her life protecting go it alone, Jess reluctantly joins them.

Together, the four make their way across the country, unravelling the mystery of where the couple disappeared to and why. But soon Jess is discovering other things too. Like a renewed sense of vulnerability and curiosity, and a willingness to expand beyond the walls she’s so carefully built. And in Adam, she finds an unexpected connection she didn’t even know was missing, if only she can let go and let him in . . .

Do you ever have an author whose books you hear so many amazing things about but haven’t picked any up yet. Kate Clayborn was that author for me and I’m so glad I finally picked up a book by her as she is certainly an author I’ll be read more from.

The Other Side of Disappearing is a heart-warming, inspirational and enchanting story. It is about love, loss and new beginnings and it was a wonderful read I would highly recommend.

Jess has spent the last decade raising her younger half-sister Tegan whilst keeping a shocking secret. The boyfriend that her mother ran away with is actually a con man who is the subject of a popular podcast. What Jess wasn’t expecting was for Tegan to piece together the connection herself. Tegan is ready to leave home and search for their mother and she will be accompanied with the podcast host and her producer, Adam. Not willing to let her sister do this alone, Jess reluctantly joins them.

Together, the four of them make their way across the country, unravelling the mystery of where the couple went to and why. But Jess discovers more than she bargained for in particular an unexpected connection to Adam.

I loved how this book discussed the complex bond between sisters. We see Jess and Tegan go through their own struggles and their join struggles and at times it gets quite emotional. It brings with it discussions of how important sisterhood, self-discovery and healing your wounds is.

Jess is a wonderful main character. It was a joy to watch her grow throughout the books even at times she could be quite frustrating. She cares so much for Tegan and it was lovely to see her start to care for others around her too. Adam deserves all the care in the world. He has been through his own troubles and it was nice to see him work through that. He is an observant and quiet love interest and in this story that works excellently.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Jess and Adam slowly start to trust one another and help each other through their struggles. All of the side characters are excellent too. In particular, Tegan and Salem bring their own additions to the story and I was a big fan of them both.

I’m a fan of the way this books deals with the trauma that the characters are facing. They aren’t all striving to get over the pain but instead learning to live with it. For me, this was extremely refreshing and powerful to read.

Kate Clayborn is an author whose books I will be picking up a lot more of in the future. Her writing is beautiful and I’m looking forward to seeing how her other books differ.

Overall, The Other Side of Disappearing is a heart-warming story of self-discovery, sisterhood, romance and so much more. I would highly recommend this one if you are looking for a book that will leave you feeling hopeful about the future.
