What I Read in April!

April has been such a busy month for me and I feel like I’ve had very little reading time. But, I’ve read 10 books throughout April which is more than I thought I’d read. In this post, you will find a bunch of mini-reviews for the books I read in April. Here they are!

It is an unusual thing, to live in a botanical garden. But Simon and Gregor are an unusual pair of gentlemen. Hidden away in their glass sanctuary from the disapproving tattle of Victorian London, they are free to follow their own interests without interference. For Simon, this means long hours in the dark basement workshop, working his taxidermical art. Gregor’s business is exotic plants – lucrative, but harmless enough. Until his latest acquisition, a strange fungus which shows signs of intellect beyond any plant he’s seen, inspires him to attempt a masterwork: true intelligent life from plant matter.

Driven by the glory he’ll earn from the Royal Horticultural Society for such an achievement, Gregor ignores the flaws in his plan: that intelligence cannot be controlled; that plants cannot be reasoned with; and that the only way his plant-beast will flourish is if he uses a recently deceased corpse for the substrate.

The experiment – or Chloe, as she is named – outstrips even Gregor’s expectations, entangling their strange household. But as Gregor’s experiment flourishes, he wilts under the cost of keeping it hidden from jealous eyes. The mycelium grows apace in this sultry greenhouse. But who is cultivating whom?

I picked this up whilst away on holiday and was without a book that took my fancy. I’m so glad that I picked this one as it was incredible! The story was so unique and not like anything I’d read before. It was scary in parts, funny in others and all round excellent. If you like flowers, horror and suspense then pick this one up.

Good news: we all have a soulmate somewhere.

Bad news: it’s caused by a deadly virus. If you feel pain, your KinTwin does too. If you die – they die too.

Control-freak Zoe is determined to stay alive. And single. She carries a survival kit for every eventuality, except for when her phone lights up with a blood match to Milo Spencer, a boy who lives for recreational danger.

Time to find a cure before love wins – or worse …

After reading Melissa Welliver’s previous book I was so excited to pick this one up. I flew through it in a matter of hours. It is a unique look at an apocalypse and leaves you thinking about the future. If you like a fast-paced, dystopian novel with a main character you can’t help but love, I’d highly recommend this one.

The night after her father’s funeral, Claire meets Lucas in a bar. Lucas doesn’t know it, but it’s not a chance meeting. One thoughtless mistyped email has put him in the crosshairs of an extremely put-out serial killer. But before they make eye contact, before Claire lets him buy her a drink, even before she takes him home and carves him up into little pieces, something about that night is very wrong. Because someone is watching Claire. Someone who is about to discover her murderous little hobby.

The thing is, it’s not sensible to tangle with a part-time serial killer, even one who is distracted by attending a weekly bereavement support group and trying to get her art career off the ground. Let the games begin…

I’ve been wanting to read this one ever since I saw it in the airport bookshop on my way to Amsterdam last year. As soon as I got back I ordered it from the library. It only arrived last month but as soon as I got my hands on it I started reading. It is a whirlwind of a book which is packed with dark humour. It is a thrilling read which I would highly recommend!

Here is a little snapshot of 5 of the books that I’ve read this month along with the rating I gave them. Any with links attached are ones you can find full review for if you click them. I enjoyed all of them this month!

Hairstylist Jess Greene has spent the last decade raising her younger half-sister, Tegan—and keeping a shocking secret. Ever since their reckless mother ran off with a boyfriend she’d known only a few months, Jess has been aware that he’s the same accomplished con man who was the subject of a wildly popular podcast, The Last Con of Lynton Baltimore.

Now thirty-one, Jess didn’t bargain on Tegan eventually piecing together the connection for herself. But Tegan plans to do exactly what Jess has always feared—leave their safe, stable home to search for their mother—and she’ll be accompanied by the prying podcast host and her watchful, handsome producer, Adam Hawkins. Unwilling to let the sister she’s spent so much of her life protecting go it alone, Jess reluctantly joins them.

Together, the four make their way across the country, unraveling the mystery of where the couple disappeared to and why. But soon Jess is discovering other things too. Like a renewed sense of vulnerability and curiosity, and a willingness to expand beyond the walls she’s so carefully built. And in Adam, she finds an unexpected connection she didn’t even know was missing, if only she can let go and let him in . . .

After hearing so many amazing things about Kate Clayborn’s books I thought it was about time to give one of them a go myself. I’m so glad I did as this was a heart-warming story of self-discovery, sisterhood, romance and so much more. I would definitely recommend giving it a read. If you want to read my full review of this book, you can find it here.

Snap’s town had a witch.

At least, that’s how the rumor goes. But in reality, Jacks is just a Crocs-wearing, internet-savvy old lady who sells roadkill skeletons online. It’s creepy, sure, but Snap thinks it’s kind of cool, too.

Snap needs a favor from this old woman, though, so she begins helping Jacks with her strange work. Snap gets to know her and realizes that Jacks may in fact have real magic—and an unlikely connection to Snap’s family’s past.

I spotted this one whilst out with my friend in Leeds and had to buy it immediately as it sounded like it was right up my street. I was correct! I loved it and was the easiest 5 stars I’ve given to a book in a long time. If you like unlikely friendships, charming characters and adorable animals, then this is the one for you. It is a beautiful book that I know I will read again in the future.
