I think most readers will agree with me when I say being in a reading slump is the worst. I always use reading to escape from all the things going on in the world so when I’m in a reading slump, I lose my main form of escape. So, I wanted to share the tips I’ve followed over the years to get out of a reading slump! Here they are!

Don’t force yourself to read
I feel this is one of the most important tips. I know that when I’m in a reading slump I try to make myself read even when I know I’m not enjoying it. That will do nothing but make your reading slump worse. Sometimes we just need a break from reading and don’t be afraid to take that break. So, be sure not to force yourself to read, you’ll be reading again in no time.
Re-read your favourite book
So many people give this one as a tip and it is for a good reason. There is a reason that your favourite book is your favourite book. Why not give it a re-read and take yourself off into a familiar story that you know you are going to love.
Change your reading format
Are you currently struggling to read a paperback, then try a different format. There are so many ways to consume a story. Instead of a paperback, give an eBook a read or maybe even an audiobook. I know that if I’m struggling with a physical book I will turn to an audiobook and that quite often gets me back in a reading swing. So, give another format a try.
Try reading at a different time of day
Do you currently read just before going to bed? Why not read when you get up instead. Sometimes it can be hard to break a routine and that includes changing the time that you usually find yourself reading. If you have 5 minutes where you would usually check your phone, change that to reading your book and check your phone another time. That change in routine may just be what you need to get out of the slump.
Read something you think you won’t like
Pick up something that you think that you will not enjoy at all. By doing this you will have no expectations of the book letting you down more than you are already expecting it to and you may even be pleasantly surprised when you enjoy it more than expected. It also means you will feel no guilt if you get a little while into it and stop reading it. Give that book a chance!
Have hope
All readers have reading slump and all reader have got out of reading slumps. Have hope that although you may not be out of it right now, you will be very soon. There is a reason we are called readers and before you know it you’ll be reading again.
